All Elica models can function both as filter or exhaust hoods: exhaust hoods take the air and expel it to the outside of the house, while filter hoods use grease and odour filters to purify the air and then return it to the original environment.

The choice of hood depends almost exclusively on the needs of the user. Some simple guidelines do exist however.

1. In the exhaust version, the hood must be connected to a specially-designed piping that expels all the sucked-in air to the outside: the piping should have a diameter of 120 mm or more and should not be excessively long or complicated since this increases the risk of pressure loss (that is, cubic metres of airflow lost) due to the aerodynamic resistance of the piping.

2. With the filter version, this piping to the outside is not necessary: instead, the sucked-in air is purified by active carbon filters and then returned to the original environment. With this hood version, correct maintenance of the odour filters is extremely important and they must be periodically replaced when necessary.
