Filter Maintenance for Your Elica Hood and Cooktop

Filter Maintenance for Your Elica Hood and Cooktop article detail

Maintaining Your Elica Hood and Cooktop Filters

Is your grease filter saturated and you're not sure when to clean it? Is the odour filter no longer trapping cooking vapours? Filter maintenance is the simplest way to keep your Elica hood or cooktop always performing at its best.

Each filter type has a different cleaning or replacement frequency. On this page you'll find instructions for every filter, with original Elica codes and direct links to the shop.

Why Cleaning Filters Makes a Difference

A clogged filter is not just an aesthetic problem. It reduces airflow, forces the motor to work harder and increases noise. Over time, an uncleaned grease filter can become a fire hazard. Just a few minutes of regular maintenance prevents all of this.

•       Optimal airflow: a clean filter keeps hood performance unchanged over time.

•       Protected motor: the grease filter protects the motor from grease particles.

•       Healthy kitchen: an odour filter in good condition captures vapours and odorous particles before they spread into the environment.

•      Longer-lasting product: regular maintenance reduces the need for technical interventions.

Grease Filter: How Often to Clean It and How

Do you have an Elica hood or cooktop and wonder how often to wash the grease filter? The general rule is once a month for normal use.

Aluminium grease filter

The aluminium grease filter is the most common. It can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher at a low temperature.

Aluminium grease filter
1 Frequency Every month, or more often if you cook over high heat every day.
2 How to clean it In the dishwasher at a low temperature, or by hand with hot water and degreasing detergent.
3 Alternatively Soak it in hot water with baking soda for a few minutes, then rinse well.
4 When to replace it If it is deformed, torn or does not regain its colour after washing.

Stainless steel grease filter

The stainless steel grease filter works the same way as the aluminium one, with a more robust appearance typical of industrial-design hoods.

Stainless steel grease filter
1 Frequency Every month.
2 How to clean it In the dishwasher or by hand with hot water and degreaser.
3 When to replace it When it shows structural damage or can no longer be cleaned effectively.

Odour Filters: Which Type Do You Have and How Often to Replace It

The odour filter captures odorous particles from the air before they are reintroduced into the kitchen. Unlike the grease filter, you can't see it getting clogged — but when it stops working you'll notice. Here are the available types and instructions for each.

Activated carbon filter

It is the most common odour filter on Elica recirculating hoods. It is not washable: when exhausted it must be replaced.

Activated carbon filter
1 Frequency Every 3/4 months with normal use.
2 How to clean it It cannot be washed. It must be replaced.
3 How to tell when it is exhausted Cooking odours remain in the air even when the hood is off.
4 How to find the right model Use the 12NC code of your hood on the Elica shop.

Long Life regenerable filter

The Long Life filter lasts much longer than activated carbon. It is regenerable: you wash and dry it instead of replacing it.

Long Life regenerable filter
1 Regeneration frequency Every 3/4 months.
2 How to regenerate it Wash it in hot water or in the dishwasher, then dry it completely before reinserting.
3 When to replace it After about 2 years of use, even if regularly regenerated.
4 Advantage Fewer replacements over time compared to the activated carbon filter.

Do you have a NikolaTesla Suit S Collection cooktop installed in recirculating mode? The filter you use is the Odour Shield, included in the Plinth In, Plinth Out and Back Outlet recirculating kits.

Odour Shield Filter

Frequently Asked Questions about Elica Filter Maintenance

How often should I change the hood filter?

It depends on the type. Grease filter: every month. Activated carbon filter: every 3/4 months. Long Life regenerable filter: regeneration every 3/4 months, replacement after about 2 years. Odour Shield filter (NikolaTesla Suit S): every 6/12 months. EVO filter (NikolaTesla Evo): regenerable for up to 3 years.

Can I wash the activated carbon filter?

No. The activated carbon filter is not washable and cannot be regenerated. It must be replaced every 3/4 months. Washing it does not restore its filtration properties.

How do I know when the odour filter is exhausted?

The clearest sign is that cooking odours remain in the air even with the hood switched off. Some Elica hoods have a maintenance indicator that lights up when it is time to act.

Can I use non-original Elica filters?

Original Elica filters are designed for each specific model, with correct dimensions and filtration properties. Using non-original filters can reduce performance, increase noise and not guarantee proper motor protection.

Can the hood grease filter catch fire?

A very clogged grease filter increases the risk of fire, especially during high-temperature cooking such as frying. Clean it every month and replace it when it is deteriorated.

How do you regenerate the Elica Long Life filter?

Wash it in hot water with neutral detergent, or in the dishwasher at a low temperature. Dry it completely before reinserting. Never reinsert a damp filter: moisture reduces filtration performance.
